Happy March 1st! (And How to Handle the Weirdest Month of the Year)

Can you believe it’s already March 1st? I feel like February lasted about five minutes.

But here we are. March. It’s kind of the awkward teenager of the months, isn't it? It’s not quite winter anymore, but it’s definitely not spring yet. It’s moody. One day it’s sunny and you think, "Yes! I can wear a light jacket!" and the next day it's snowing sideways.

Since we’re stuck in this weird transition period, I put together a little mental "pocket list" to help me get through the next 31 days without going crazy waiting for real sunshine.

Here’s how I’m planning to handle the month:

Easing into Spring (Without the Pressure)

Forget doing a massive "spring cleaning" right now. Just thinking about that makes me tired. My goal this month is to pick exactly one junk drawer in the kitchen and organize it. That’s it. Victory.

Also, let's just accept the mud. It’s going to be messy out there. I’ve already picked out an old pair of "sacrificial shoes" to leave by the door for muddy walks.

The biggest tip though? The very first day the temperature hits 50 degrees, crack your windows for ten minutes. Seriously. Let that stale, dusty winter air out and smell actual dirt and rain. It changes everything.

Changing up the Menu

I don't know about you, but I'm kind of over heavy winter stews. My body is starting to crave green things. Keep an eye at the grocery store for the first fresh green salads or crunch snap peas. It just feels right.

I’m also ready to swap out the hot cocoas for something crisp. I’ve been loving sparkling water with a big squeeze of lime and maybe a little mint. It’s cold, bubbly, and tastes like optimism in a glass.

Embracing the Chaos

March just feels frantic, doesn’t it? Everyone is in such a rush for the warm weather to finally arrive, and the transition can feel pretty chaotic. Instead of rushing it, I’m just trying to lean into the slow, muddy progress.

Around the 20th, we hit the spring equinox. That moment when day and night are perfectly balanced. It’s actually a great time to check in on those New Year's resolutions you made. If they already failed (no judgment, mine usually do), March is a great time for a reset.

Mostly, I'm just going to watch the weather like it's a spectator sport. Is today a "lion" or a "lamb"? Keeping score makes the unpredictability feel like a game instead of just annoying.

One Last Thing...

Don't forget, we lose an hour of sleep March 8th for Daylight Saving Time. Ugh. Start preparing mentally for that extra coffee now.

Emily Dickinson once wrote that March is the month of "expectation." She nailed it. We’re all just waiting for that first flower to show up. Hang in there, try not to slip on the ice, and Happy March!
